More than 12 tons of cocaine that would be sent to Mexico were seized on Monday in the port of Cartagena (northern Colombia on the Caribbean Sea), Colombian Navy said in a statement . The drug was found in a container loaded with raw sugar that was destined for the Mexican city of Veracruz, and was detected by anti-narcotics dogs in the port of Cartagena.
The operation there was no arrest. This seizure is the largest ever recorded in 2011, according to authorities.
Admiral Roberto Garcia, chief of naval operations in Cartagena, said preliminary investigation showed the drugs belonged to the gang of stubble, which integrate narcotraficants and former paramilitaries.
Colombia ranks as the largest cocaine producer in the world, with 410 tonnes in 2009, according to UN figures.
